Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Transit is pleased to once again partner with Manitoba Public Insurance to offer free Transit service on New Year’s Eve to help everyone get home safely.
“The Free Ride program allows Winnipeggers to celebrate safely on New Year’s Eve,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Acting Deputy Mayor of the City of Winnipeg. “Winnipeg Transit, with support from Manitoba Public Insurance, offers a free and easy option to get home at the end of the evening, while helping to keep the roads safe by preventing alcohol-related tragedies.”
The Free Ride program applies to all Regular and Handi-Transit service starting at 7:00 p.m. until end of service. The last buses leave downtown at approximately 1:35 a.m. For complete bus route and schedule information, visitwinnipegtransit.com or call 311.
“We encourage people to plan ahead and make the right decision and not to drive while impaired” said Ward Keith, Vice President, Business Development and Communications and Chief Product Officer, Manitoba Public Insurance. “There are many options to get home safely this New Year’s Eve and access to free Transit services in Winnipeg makes it easier to make the right choice not to drink and drive.”
Manitoba Public Insurance has sponsored the Free Ride New Year’s Eve service since 2011. As a road safety leader in the province, Manitoba Public Insurance is committed to reducing alcohol-related collisions, deaths and injuries.
“All too often we encounter impaired drivers who tell us they had no choice but to drive. We know that is not true,” said Winnipeg Police Staff Sergeant Rob Riffel. “This program provides another safe alternative to this dangerous decision to drive impaired.”
Last year, more than 15,000 revelers made Winnipeg Transit part of their plan to get home safely on New Year’s Eve
